Story of Mirko
My name is Mirko, and I'm currently 14 years old. I have been involved in many plays with S4A, including Hamlet, Julius Caesar, Antony and Cleopatra, King Lear, and A Midsummer Night's Dream. My favourite quote from these plays is "To say the truth, reason and love keep little company together nowadays," from A Midsummer Night's Dream. This line reveals that although Nick Bottom is often funny and egotistical, he carries a surprising amount of wisdom behind his facade.
It's been a while since I first joined S4A, at the time I was quite shy, timid, and unable to utter a single word in front of teachers or strangers. Joining S4A helped me develop my public speaking skills. I still remember delivering my first lines in front of an audience of about 500 people. It was a terrifying moment, but it helped me conquer my fears and become the person I am today. Initially, I joined the program just for fun and to try something new. I never expected it would change my personality, my way of speaking, and my interests so profoundly!
My favourite moment of the program has to be when everything comes together to form one spectacular production for the world to see. It showcases not only the dedication and hard work of the actors but also the backstage crew who handle the lighting, audio cues, props, backgrounds, and costumes. It's amazing to see how the actors support one another and work as a team, helping each other both on and off stage. Additionally, performing is always a thrilling experience. We not only get to showcase our talent but also bring Shakespeare's characters to life, sharing our interpretations with the audience.
I have so many memories from being a part of S4A, especially some funny ones. I remember one time when we were preparing for the final rehearsal at our rehearsal venue, my goofy friends got into the wrong costume. We were all looking for the costume until we realised she was wearing it! After we had found out that it was all a big misunderstanding, we just laughed our way into the rehearsal.
By the end of the programme, I could see how I had evolved for the better. The once shy and naive version of myself has been replaced by someone who is outgoing and eager to show what I am truly capable of. Through the process of rehearsals and performances, I’ve made many friends who share the same passion for delivering the best play possible. It’s been a relief and a joy to connect with so many like-minded people along the way.
This experience has taught me that being expressive can be incredibly useful at times. I am grateful to S4A for teaching me these techniques, which have not only helped me in the program but also in making friends at school.
As for advice, there isn’t much to offer except this: everyone starts from the ground up, no matter where they are in life. Drama is a part of life, and learning to navigate it can lead to great accomplishments. S4A has changed my life for the better, and I am confident it will do the same for you. My one piece of advice is to make sure you have fun throughout the entire program!
